Hi all, Just the other day, at a family birthday celebration, my great-nephew who turned 18 blew out his candles...but they didn't go out! They were those trick candles that only go completely out if you put them in water. As we prepare to celebrate the 'birthday' of the Church this coming Pentecost weekend, I think his experience can be ours in so many ways. Try as history has, and as our current state of religious indifference or even intolerance does, the flame of the Holy Spirit cannot be extinguished. The great gift of the Holy Spirit that will be renewed in us this week is one that inflames our hearts and minds to do that same work: renew the face of the earth right around us. Pentecost, the 50th day of Easter, also brings to a close our celebration of the Easter season, but that doesn't mean that the resurrection of Christ needn't still be celebrated, proclaimed, and lived. After all, every Sunday is a 'little Easter', and every single day of our lives should be a proclamation that our Lord has conquered sin and death for us. And so as ordinary time begins, don't let your trust in God just be ordinary: believe that God has called you to do amazing things, and you will accomplish them; believe that God has gifted you with His amazing grace, and it is yours; believe that God trusts you with amazing abilities, and continue renewing the face of the earth. I hope you'll join me and your parish family next Sunday evening at 5:00 pm for our Pentecost Party (I hear it includes a bonfire!) and set your hearts aflame for all the gifts God wants to give you through the community of St. Anne Catholic Church.
